Chapter 8: The Realm and Patterns of the Divine Mother

Gate: Three of Pentacles

I stepped through the vision gate into darkness which stretched in all directions. Beneath my feet, water appeared and I walked on its surface. Above, a sky full of stars appeared and shone down upon the water, causing a brilliant reflection in the water that dazzled my eyes in that dark place. I walked through that realm for some time with stars above me, stars below, and a living void in-between.

Then, for no reason I could tell, some of the stars fell from above and descended towards the water. As the light of the falling stars moved closer, I realized these beings weren’t stars at all but brightly glowing fairies. More and more descended from on high and landed upon and around me until I was completely covered in their shining light.

I held up my hand before my face and saw that it glowed from within with the light of the fallen fairy spirits. “Wisdom, are you in this place with me?” I asked, wiggling my fingers experimentally. Other than their new blindingly bright light, they functioned as normal.

“We are here,” spoke the Wisdom within my heart. “Something about you looks a little different, Heidi. Don’t tell us what it is, we’ll figure it out in time.”

“You’re always teasing me,” I said, bringing my hand back down to my side. “I hope I get the joke someday. Where are we?”

“Welcome to the realm of the Divine Mother, the Giver of Form,” Wisdom replied in their many voices. “Her fairies have indicated that you may be received into her presence at this time. Come, we shall take you to the Mother so that you may know her as we do.”

“Everybody has a mother,” I said. “Whose mother is this?” The fairies began to laugh, emitting the sound of tiny bells chiming in unison. “What’d I say?” I asked as their sparkling light grew even stronger around me.

“She is not a mother, Heidi,” Wisdom said gently. “She is The Mother, the Divine Mother of All Creation.”

“The Mother? Everybody’s Mother?” I said. “Then how come I’ve never heard of her?” The fairies went berserk, zipping in all directions and creating complex patterns in the air around me that were reflected in the shining water. “I didn’t mean to upset anybody with my ignorance,” I said, shielding my eyes from the hypnotic lights. “I may not know the Divine Mother now but I will know her shortly. Wisdom, which way do we go?”

“The way to the Mother of All is through the void beneath your feet,” Wisdom said. “You must allow yourself to enter her waters of creation.” As Wisdom spoke, I lay down in the sparkling water with its fairy light and rolled over so that my face was in it. Then, I began to sink.

I had trouble perceiving anything within those shadowed waters after the brilliance of the stars at the entrance. But then, a glowing and pulsing umbilical cord appeared within the water with me. I followed it into the darkness and depths until I reached the end where it went directly into the trunk of a tree which was made of the same material as the cord. The branches on the underwater tree shifted and moved under its own power with a fluidity like water. One of the branches lowered from high above and offered me a piece of its glowing fruit.

“Taste of the Fruit of Understanding, Heidi, so that you may enter the Mother’s realm,” instructed Wisdom. “We know you’re not a big fan of fruit but perhaps this will be to your liking.”

I took the fruit off the branch of the glowing tree and examined it. At first, I thought I was looking at an orange but the sphere was smushy like a sponge and had no skin to contain its purplish flesh. “It’s like the biggest and weirdest looking grape I’ve ever seen,” I said. “Well, here goes nothing.” I opened my mouth wide and consumed the fruit with large bites. The flesh of the fruit was sugary, more so than anything comparable I’ve ever had in the waking world. When the fruit was consumed, the tree shuddered and quaked once. Then, I was pulled directly into the tree by a power outside of my own.

My vision dissolved into pulsing light that gathered about my feet in vines resembling a pumpkin patch. The trailing vines led to a throne made of the night sky with the stars reflected on its surface and a figure made of the light of the vine, tree, and stars was seated on this dark throne.

She wore a garment shaped like a flower bulb with an Elizabethan collar made of delicate lace with beads of the finest pearl sewn in geometric patterns around her neck. As I watched, the goddess gave off a continuous cloud of the fairies from her person. Every tiny movement or gesture sent brilliant balls of star light in all directions. She shone with those lights in that dark place where the void surrounded all and blanketed the realm in a comforting darkness and silence. I stood for a time, transfixed by the sight of the Giver of Form in her place of power.

I do not know how long I was in this state of wonderment until the goddess noticed my presence. I felt as if she smiled at me but such were the shadows about her countenance that I could not clearly perceive her face.

“Hello, my child,” she said. “I am the Divine Mother. Why are you here at this time?”

“Great One, Mother,” I said, bowing in respect. “I am called Heidi and I’m here to learn your true nature. What are those lights that surround you?”

“You see my thoughts,” the goddess said. “They depart from me and go throughout all levels of creation, holding its structure in place and carrying my will with them. In this way, they are my children and they are also me as much as any spirits in existence.” She beckoned for me to come closer.

I picked my way through the vines of the Mother’s sacred space, only tripping once or twice, before I reached the base of the throne made of stars. “I am here, Mother,” I said. “We may need to create some avenues in your vines to make approaching your presence a little easier for those who seek you.”

“This is a fair idea,” the goddess said. “We shall do so because you asked it of us. No one has asked anything of us in a very long time.”

The Divine Mother lifted a single finger and a stream of fairies emerged from her hand and blazed through the darkness of the void and the vines around the throne. In moments, half a dozen paths were cleared through the tangled growth revealing smooth avenues of stone which led to the goddess’ seat. I felt, but could not see, spirits appearing on these paths and felt their approach through the void. Their attention did not bother me for the Mother’s comforting presence banished any fear I held in either my conscious mind or secret heart.

After a few moments of quiet contemplation and communion in that timeless place, the Divine Mother pulled a cup made of light and shadow out of her own heart. “Drink deeply of my Cup of Life, Heidi,” she said. “I offer it to you freely and without reservation.”

I hesitated. “Why would I deserve such a gift, Great One?” I said. “I did not even know of your existence until today.”

“You knew me well once, my child,” the goddess said. “You will know me again now. Your memory likes to play tricks on you because creation smiles as you remember all you once were.”

“In the meantime, Divine Mother,” I said. “My knowledge and understanding gaps are somewhat embarrassing to me. I am sorry that I only found my way here by accident. It seems to me that yours is a path that should be walked more consciously than I managed in my waking world.”

“Never mind the past and its attendant shadows,” the goddess said. “You are here now. You desire to know me and my realm. This draught will help you, I swear it.” I paused for a moment more to fully absorb the Divine Mother’s words then I drank of the cup from her own hand. My vision fractured into the darkness of the void and the lights streaming from the Mother. Between these two polarities, I saw the fairy thoughts of the goddess forming patterns and shapes that seared themselves into my imagination.

The shapes became shining letters of the Latin alphabet, then the letters arranged themselves into words. “Breathing in, I love you,” wrote the fairies. “Breathing out, I love you.”

“I didn’t know fairies could write, Mother. I find your realm to be very strange,” I confessed as I swallowed a liquid that tasted of the fruit of understanding. As the Divine Mother laughed at my words, my vision solidified back into her garden and dark throne as the cup vanished from her hand. Then, with some effort, the goddess lifted her body from her sacred seat. I could not see her feet moving beneath her gown as she began to drift slowly along one of the paths through her glowing vines.

“We become accustomed to wherever and whenever it is that we are. If I were to be in your world in this particular form, I would find it very strange as well,” the Divine Mother said. “Here, you see me as a living extension of my vines. This is a curious interpretation of my true nature but one which I will allow for I wish for you to know me in whatever manner is most comfortable to you. Now, come with me, Heidi, I have something to show you.” Struggling forward with each movement a push of raw effort, she continued away from her throne and further out among the vines.

“Mother, why do you have such difficulty moving?” I asked, batting an errant fairy from my face when he threatened to fly into my eyes. “Your thoughts are unbound but your form seems rooted to the ground.”

“It is my undeniable association with physical form that is causing you to view me thus. Outside of your unique point of consciousness, I may take any form I desire. In this structured and shared vision of vines and fairies, I prefer to stay at my place of power but I can move about if I wish. See how I use the energy from my garden to walk without legs,” the goddess said. “My male counterpart makes certain the vital forces of creation are readily available to be called upon at any time and any place out of love for me.” The Mother continued to pulse slowly but inevitably forward like the tide upon the shore. I followed in her footsteps until we came to the crest of a hill within the vines.

The Divine Mother’s glowing realm went as far as the eye could see in every direction within the void. Everything except the trailing vines and the fairy thoughts that continued to come off of her body in clouds was darkness and shadow. I shivered at the realization of how close I walked to the abyss and drew closer to the goddess to share more of her brilliant light outside of the waiting shadows.

She led me down the hill into a different cluster of vines. These new plants were tall with tendrils of leaves so delicate that I almost imagined they were hair which waved softly back and forth as if in an unseen breeze. As the Divine Mother passed through this gentle sea of life, they reached out to touch her and caress her physical presence with their tendrils.

“Behold my Garden of Mothers, my child,” she said. “All of the vines you see are mothers in different realms of existence. My female energy causes the babe to stay in the fertilized womb, the seed to take root in the fields of gold or otherwise, and the animals within creation to have their young in their proper season. Your sister is currently a part of my garden. You were once a part of it yourself.” She turned and gently kissed my forehead.

“I had great difficulties in your garden, Divine Mother,” I said. “Though these trials are what eventually brought me to your doorstep today, I found many shadows within my heart during my transition from maiden to mother. I think maybe I did the passage improperly because I never intended to be a mother in the first place.”

“You would be surprised at how many have spoken to me of similar insecurities,” the goddess said. “Some say there are no accidents in life but I believe these do still happen, especially when you consider the innate differences between vital energy and static form. What a happy accident for me to have you in my garden in this lifetime, do you not agree?”

“Some happiness came from your garden, yes,” I said. “But ever so many shadows too. It is because of these shadows, Mother, that I do not truly understand this place or you. Everything is simply too different from the reality that I know or wish to know.”

“I will send you to visit one of these in my garden,” the goddess said. “Perhaps then, with a living example to observe and assist, you will understand me. For I want you to understand me, child, at whatever level you can now and, perhaps one day, you will know all of my mysteries and greatest secrets. Your journey to self knowledge, however long and winding, will take you back to who you really are. I see this truth with my inner vision and I know it to be true in my heart.”

The Mother raised her voice and addressed the invisible host around us. “This is my wish and express command to those who guide and guard this spirit. Take Heidi wherever and to whomever she needs to accomplish her great task, the exploration and interpretation of the true nature of the Inner and Outer Realms,” the goddess said. “Do this thing because you love me as I love you, all of you, without exception.” She raised her hands over my head in blessing and then I turned into a glowing spark, one of the thoughts of the Mother made manifest. As light, I descended into one of the plants of the Divine Mother’s garden.

When I could see again, I found myself in a mossy cave with a thick carpet of plant growth under my feet. A primitive woman from the ancient world cried out in the pain of childbirth within this cave and she was all alone. The woman wore a spotted animal skin to cover her nakedness and a fire burned next to her, providing both a source of light and heat in that dark place. As her labor progressed, the woman groaned and clutched at a large stone in front of her, taking strength from the uncut rock of her cave and using it, somehow, to ease her pain.

“Where are this woman’s attendants?” I asked, drawing close to the woman and attempting to put my arms around her but I passed through her body as if I was made of nothing more than starlight. “Where are those who are to shepherd the baby from another world to this one?”

“That would be you,” Wisdom spoke from my heart. “You are the Mother’s representative at this particular birth.”

“Me?” I asked in consternation. “There could hardly be a less competent person on the face of this planet to help with a birthing bed. What am I to do? She’s hurting badly and her mate is missing. Oh God, what if she bleeds and will not stop? What if the baby becomes trapped in her pelvis? What if … I can think of a billion things that may go wrong.”

“Take a deep breath, Heidi,” Wisdom advised. “You’re panicking. We need you to remain calm. Instead of imagining what may go wrong, what if, instead, you recite the fairy mantra from the Mother to her and visualize everything going as nature intends.”

“The fairy mantra?” I said, still flittering helplessly about the mother in her labor pains. “I can try it if you think it’ll help but what good are words in a crisis situation. This woman needs medical assistance.”

“Let us demonstrate to you the power of the spiritual realm upon the physical world, Heidi,” Wisdom murmured. “We need you to center yourself and remember the words the Mother gave to your keeping. That’s all you have to do. We’ll say it with you if you’d like. Words are so powerful. You will see and understand our meaning in time.”

“Please help me, Wisdom. This is insane,” I said and arranged myself behind the mother with my hands on either of her shoulders. “Ok, fairy mantra time. Just because I’ve never done anything like this before in my memory doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. The Mother wouldn’t have sent me somewhere that I couldn’t be of service to her somehow even in my limited capacity and belief system. So, deep breaths, here we go. Breathing in, I love you. Breathing out, I love you…”

Wisdom and I spoke the pattern the fairies had given to me to the woman over and over again and, though I still believed she could not hear us, I saw additional strength entering the mother’s body. Her shoulders firmed beneath my touch and her breathing became as even and measured as my own. “Oh my God, it’s working. Wisdom, it’s working!” I said. “Breathing in, I love you. Breathing out, I love you.”

“Oh ye of little faith,” Wisdom said. “Keep going, Heidi. Her trial isn’t over yet.”

The woman’s stomach began to clench beneath her garments, so strongly that it was clear even to my untrained eyes that she was entering a different level of labor. I paused a moment in my recitation to give the mother a moment of spiritual rest before the next stage was upon us.

“Wisdom, why is birth accomplished with so much pain?” I asked. “If I were Nature herself, I would want to make this experience as easy and painless as possible.”

“The mothers create a doorway from another world with their physical bodies for a new spirit to enter their existence. That is why there is pain. The body is already a gate for the mother’s own spirit, the addition of another requires adjustment on myriad levels, the most obvious of which is the flesh with its attendant nerve endings,” Wisdom whispered. “We have not yet devised a path around this universal truth. But the adjustment can be eased with the help of other attendant spirits sending soothing energy and desire for a seamless transition from outside of the body to the ones creating and passing through the gate, as you have seen today. It is not only a physical transformation from one body to two, it is also a spiritual division of a mother’s spirit from her child.”

“Hmmm, this is a far more complicated process than I imagined or learned in biology,” I said as I put my unseen hands upon the woman’s shoulders once more. “Perhaps, one day, we will understand both the physical and spiritual mechanisms of the birthing process. Watch out world for when that day comes, I will have a child myself to see how it is done. As things are not nearly that advanced in this cave of time and place, I’ll wait for some massive improvements before I attempt it. Until that day, I’ll simply embody the Divine Mother’s command to share her love if I’m asked to do this birthing attendant thing again. Fairies, now is the time to demonstrate your presence. Please help this mother and make this birth as simple as breathing. Creator of All, please hear me and give us proof of your spiritual dominion over the physical world. Thank you for demonstrating your mercy to all without exception. Breathing in, I love you. Breathing out, I love you.”

I don’t know how long Wisdom and I remained in the cave, speaking words of the Divine Mother to one of her representatives upon the face of the earth. I entered a trance-like state and with my new eyes I could see into another layer of reality, where myriad fairies circled ceaselessly around the woman and I, grazing us lightly with their fingers and wings, transferring their innate energy and patterns from another world. They were silently helping us in honor of the one who put the stars in motion and who had created all of the spirits who were present in that moment both embodied and not.

This continued until finally the woman gave one last cry, rose to her knees, and pushed forth her baby. As the child emerged, I saw a bright light entering the other layer of fairy reality from another realm just as the baby’s physical form entered the waking world. Then my vision settled back into one and under Wisdom and my watchful eyes, the new mother bit the birth cord in twain and then she settled the child within her animal skin against her own body, cooing softly to him all the while.

“She did it!” I said, clapping my hands with joy. “Thank you, Lord! Thank you, God!”

“Nice work, Servant of Love,” whispered Wisdom.

“It was all her,” I said, speaking silently through my heart to encourage the elemental spirits in the woman’s fire to burn brightly for her own comfort and the comfort of her newborn. “The woman and the Mother’s fairies.”

“You know that’s not true,” Wisdom said. “You saw with your own eyes the close collaboration between the spiritual and physical realms. Your words created a bridge for both to participate to the best of their ability.”

“The Mother’s words you mean,” I said. “I am only a messenger but I have learned an important lesson today about the power of the spoken word.” The spirits of fire responded happily to my unspoken request and danced within the flames, throwing one or two celebratory sparks straight up into the air. I laughed at their display, then I found myself rising through the air of the cave and broke through the surface of the waters of creation in the place where I had entered the Divine Mother’s realm.

I began to float upon the water as the fairies or thoughts of the Mother continued to glow and flit back and forth gently overhead through the void, carrying her will throughout the worlds. “I will stay here until I know the patterns of creation as well as I know myself,” I said, a new desire entering my heart. “I think the fairies will speak to me again if I give them the opportunity to do so and, after what I saw today, I very much hope that they do.”

“That could be a very long time,” Wisdom whispered. “What is time to the fairies?”

“We’ll remain as long as it takes,” I said. “Please help me remember them all, Wisdom. It may be more important than I ever imagined.” I drifted on the water, learning and absorbing the flickering patterns from above in peace and contentment.

There my vision ended.
